How to Calculate Instagram Engagement Rate (Free Formula + Calculator)

Engagement rate is the single most-quoted Instagram metric, and also the one most people calculate slightly differently without realizing it. The formula itself takes thirty seconds to learn. Knowing which version of it you’re actually looking at takes a bit more — and it’s the difference between comparing two accounts fairly and comparing two different things that happen to look like the same number.

The Basic Formula

At its simplest:

Engagement Rate = (Likes + Comments) ÷ Followers × 100

That’s the version most calculators default to, and it’s a reasonable starting point. It’s also incomplete in two ways that matter: it usually leaves out saves and shares, and dividing by total followers rather than actual reach can make the same content look better or worse depending on an account’s follower count — a problem covered in more depth in our engagement rate by follower tier breakdown.

Followers vs. Reach: Which Denominator to Use

Divide by followers
Divide by reach
Easiest to calculate — followers is always visible
More accurate — measures engagement against people who actually saw the post
Penalizes accounts whose reach is smaller than their follower count
Requires access to per-post reach data (Instagram Insights or a analytics tool)
Standard for public, cross-account comparisons
Better for judging your own content’s actual performance

Neither is “wrong” — they answer different questions. Follower-based rate is what most public benchmarks and calculators use, since reach isn’t publicly visible on someone else’s account. Reach-based rate is what’s actually useful when you’re optimizing your own content, since it tells you what happened among the people who were shown the post, not the entire audience that may or may not have seen it.

A Worked Example

Take a post with 400 likes, 25 comments, 60 saves, and 15 shares, on an account with 20,000 followers and a reach of 8,000 for that post.

  • Basic formula (likes + comments ÷ followers): (400 + 25) ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.13%
  • Full engagement, follower-based (likes + comments + saves + shares ÷ followers): (400 + 25 + 60 + 15) ÷ 20,000 × 100 = 2.5%
  • Full engagement, reach-based (same numerator ÷ reach): 500 ÷ 8,000 × 100 = 6.25%

Same post, three defensible numbers, a nearly 3x spread between the smallest and largest. None of them is fraudulent — they’re just measuring against different denominators. The mistake is comparing a number calculated one way against a benchmark calculated a different way and treating the gap as meaningful.

What Should Count as “Engagement”

Likes and comments are the default, but saves and shares are worth including whenever the data is available — both require more deliberate action than a passive like, and both are harder to fake at scale. Profile visits and link clicks are sometimes included in broader “engagement” definitions but are usually better tracked as separate funnel metrics rather than folded into the rate itself, since mixing action types with very different intent levels muddies what the number is actually telling you.

Use the Free Calculator

Doing this math by hand for every post gets old fast. Hexrate’s free Instagram Engagement Rate Calculator runs the follower-based formula on any public account or post in seconds — useful for a quick check before diving into a full analysis.

Frequently Asked Questions

Should I use follower-based or reach-based engagement rate?

Use follower-based when comparing against public benchmarks or other accounts, since reach isn’t public. Use reach-based when evaluating your own content’s actual performance, since it isn’t skewed by dormant followers who never see the post.

Do saves and shares really matter that much for the calculation?

They can meaningfully change the number, as the worked example above shows, and they’re a stronger signal of genuine interest than a like. If you’re comparing your own numbers over time, just make sure you’re including the same set of actions every time you calculate it.

Why does a free calculator give a different number than my analytics tool?

Almost always because they’re using different formulas — one might divide by followers, another by reach, and definitions of “engagement” vary in whether they include saves and shares. Check what’s in the denominator and numerator before assuming either number is wrong.
