How to Read Your Instagram Insights Like a Pro

Analytics dashboard showing a growth trend chart and audience breakdown

Instagram’s native Insights tool gives every professional account a genuinely useful analytics dashboard for free — the problem is that most people open it, glance at the top number, and close it again. Reading it properly takes maybe five extra minutes and tells you a lot more about what’s actually working. Here’s how to navigate it and what to actually pay attention to.

Getting Access

Insights is available to Professional accounts only (Business or Creator) — a free, one-time switch in Settings if you’re still on a personal account. Once switched, you’ll find Insights via your profile’s menu, or directly from the “View insights” link that appears under any individual post, Reel, or Story.

The Three Sections That Matter

Accounts Reached

This is your reach for the selected time period, broken into followers versus non-followers, plus the top content types and locations (Feed, Reels, Stories, Explore) driving that reach. The follower/non-follower split is the single most useful number in this section — it tells you whether you’re actually expanding beyond your existing audience or just re-serving the same people.

Accounts Engaged

This covers likes, comments, saves, shares, and replies, again split by follower status. Saves and shares are worth watching specifically — they’re a stronger signal of content someone found genuinely useful than a like is, and they’re what most people skip past when they only check the top-line number.

Total Followers

A trend line of follower count over time, plus the days and hours your audience is most active — genuinely useful for choosing when to post, but easy to over-read; a single day’s follow/unfollow spike usually isn’t worth chasing an explanation for.

Which Metric to Check for Which Question

Quick reference: metric to check by goal
Is this reaching new people?Non-follower reach %
Did people actually value it?Saves & shares
Is a post performing well overall?Engagement rate
When should I post? Most active times
Is my content driving profile visits?Profile activity

Notice that “total followers” isn’t the answer to any of these questions on its own — it’s a lagging result of the other four, not a metric to optimize for directly.

Reading Individual Post Insights

Per-post Insights add a few numbers the account-level view doesn’t show clearly: plays and average watch time for Reels and video, and — for Stories specifically — exits and forward taps, which flag exactly where in a sequence people lost interest or skipped ahead. If a Reel has strong reach but a short average watch time, the hook isn’t working even though the algorithm is still showing it to people; that’s a content problem Insights can actually help you diagnose, not just report.

Common Reading Mistakes

  • Judging a post the day it goes up. Reach and engagement keep accumulating for at least 48 hours on most posts, longer for Reels that get picked up by Explore. An early number isn’t a final one.
  • Comparing engagement rate across formats without adjusting expectations. A Story and a feed carousel are measured against very different typical ranges — a “low” number on one format can be entirely normal on another.
  • Only checking the account-level Overview. It’s a fine weekly summary, but the actual “why” behind a good or bad week is almost always in the per-post breakdown, not the top-line trend.

How Hexrate Fits In

Native Insights is genuinely good, but it resets its framing every time you open it — there’s no built-in memory of what changed since last week or why. Pulse takes the same underlying data and turns it into a daily read: what moved, in which direction, and a plain-language note on why, so you’re not manually comparing this week’s Overview screen to a screenshot of last week’s.

Frequently Asked Questions

How far back does Instagram Insights data go?

Most account-level Insights are limited to the last 90 days within the app itself. Individual post Insights remain available for as long as the post exists, but the account-wide trend views don’t go back further than that 90-day window.

Why don’t my Insights numbers match a third-party analytics tool?

Different tools often use different formulas or counting windows — some include saves and shares in “engagement,” others don’t; some measure reach at 24 hours, others at 7 days. Neither is wrong, but they’re not directly comparable unless you confirm both are using the same definition.

Do I need a Business account or a Creator account for Insights?

Either works — both are “Professional” account types and both include the same core Insights. The choice between them mostly affects contact-button options and category labeling on your profile, not analytics access.
